Description: All-hard plastic with socket head, brown
sleep eyes, lashes, painted lower lashes and brows, closed mouth,
curly fleeced wig, five-piece body. The doll is wearing her original
white rayon sailor suit with red embroidery "Mary Martin", socks,
shoes and sailor cap. The costume is tagged "Mary Martin of South
Pacific, Madame Alexander, New York". The doll was presented in 1949
and 1950 to coincide with the beloved Broadway play in which Mary
Martin starred.
Martin appeared in the Rodgers and Hammerstein hit South Pacific
based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific. Several of its
songs, including "Bali Ha'i," "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger than
Springtime," and "A Wonderful Guy" have become worldwide standards.
The Broadway production of South Pacific was nominated for ten Tony
Awards and won all of them, including Best Musical, Best Score and
Best Libretto. It was the only musical production ever to win all
four Tony Awards for acting. The show was a critical and box office
hit.
Critics loved Mary Martin in the comic role of Ensign Nellie Forbush,
the role which won her a Tony award.
Of course, she has the signature reddish brown caracul wig. "Gonna
